So I visited my Grammy and Gran this weekend. Bryan wants to start a volunteer fire department and my Gran has already done this. On Sunday morning and as we were sitting at the breakfast table eatting my Grammy's bisquits and gravy my Gran started talking about fruit and blue cheese. From there the conversation turned into a discussion about hamburgers and how my gran knew someone who made awesome hamburgers. Gran said that because they lived up in Washington, he thought the secret might be adding apples into the hamburger mix. We started talking about the trips that we have taken and how much my Gran enjoyed traveling on US 60 which got me thinking about Pie Town, NM and their fantastic New Mexican Apple Pie. I thought Their filling of green chilis and apples would be fantastic in a burger. So since we were making hamburgers for lunch for some of the family I decided to try out making green chili and apple stuffing for like four of the burgers and topping it with sharp cheddar cheese. It turned out wonderfully and I'm attaching the recipe:
1 Granny Smith Apple (cored and thinly diced)
1 large can of hatch or macayos diced green chilis (drained)
1 tablespoon of cinnamon
1 teaspoon of ground allspice
salt to taste
1 lb of hamburger meat
salt and pepper to taste
8 slices of sharp cheddar cheese
2 tablespoons of Butter
Buns
In a medium size bowl mix the apple, green chili, cinnamon, allspice, and salt.
Let it sit for about 30 minutes while you start making hamburger patties.
Make about 8 patties, salt and pepper them.
Put about 1/8 cup of stuffing on 4 of the patties and then place the one of the remaining patties on top of each of the patties with stuffing. Push the sides together creating a stuffing pillow surrounded by meat.
Grill as you would normally do and top each burger with two slices of sharp cheddar.
Butter the buns and grill. Assemble and enjoy!
